What the hell do I do? I ask myself that question on a daily basis. I work at a Fortune 100 company managing communication programs and I feel like my soul is suffocating. But I have no idea what comes next. Thanks for sharing and giving me a little nudge to keep asking the question and trying to find an answer.Kerrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15310974358455711050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6375235.post-1121654934904007842005-07-17T19:48:00.000-07:002005-07-17T19:48:00.000-07:00This sounds like excerpts from the book by Po Bron...This sounds like excerpts from the book by Po Bronson. It's actually a really good book with some interesting stories.

However, I don't really agree with his idea that "You either love what you do or you don't. Period." That's a little black and white, don't you think? It's true that right now, you hate what you do and you definitely need to change something. But I think it's unrealistic to think that there is a job out there that you will "love, period". I don't know anyone who has a job like that. And I think very few people are lucky enough to have a passion that readily translates into a job.

I just answered the question for myself by asking not "What do I want to do with my life" but "what can I handle doing, day after day, for a lot of years in a row?" Because, you know, work isn't your life. Work is what you do to be able to afford the rest of your life. I am passionate about my family, my husband, my dog, movies, quilting, and hiking. (Oh, and chocolate.) But during the day, I'm a librarian! And that's fine. Maybe with a job, it's better to aim for simple contentment, rather than for 'passion' or 'love'. :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6375235.post-1121270709772965422005-07-13T09:05:00.000-07:002005-07-13T09:05:00.000-07:00Oh poor Cad Monkey. You are not alone. The only advice I can give you is first of all fuck all outside influences and criticism. For example who cares what some possible future employer might think about a gap in architectural employment. You have to please yourself first before you please others. Second I say try EVERYTHING. If you don't fit in with your current firm find another that you think you would fit in better at. I really think instead of doing what your good at for a career you should do what you enjoy instead. You can always learn how to do something better.

I wasn't happy at my last job at a large firm. So I went the opposite and came here to a TINY firm. I'm realizing I don't like this either so now I'm looking for something else. Keep looking you'll find it soon enough.

Oh and one final thought. I know its a little cliche but... Life isn't about the destination its about the journey...Kenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16717101323002249958noreply@blogger.com
